A car crash five years ago left Kane Walton, head of his family's southern district, in a wheelchair. Sent to collect a lucky star, he is handed Maeve instead, a six year old his relatives call a jinx. Scarred and timid, she carries a golden storybook only she can see. Kane and his wife Celia adopt her. Nobody expects the girl they threw away to mend his ruined legs and expose the poison plot inside his own family.
